Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rehman Barq has been booked for sedition, promoting enmity, and hurting religious sentiments for supporting the Taliban. The Uttar Pradesh Police booked Sambhal MP after he issued a statement on August 16 hailing Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and comparing their assault on the country with India’s freedom struggle. He initially quoted, “When India was under British rule, our country fought for freedom. Now Taliban wants to free their country and run it. Taliban is a force that did not allow even strong countries like Russia and the US to settle in their country,” Barq has been booked under sections 124a (Sedition), 153a (Promoting enmity between groups) and 295a (outraging religious feelings). The FIR against Barq has been filed after a written complaint in this regard was filed late last night by BJP leaders Rajesh Singhal, Zonal Vice president, and Omveer Khadagwanshi, BJP district president. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party MP said that get did not compare the Taliban with Indian freedom fighters and his statement has been misinterpreted.  After Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) spokesperson Maulana Sajjad Nomani has also praised the Taliban and given a controversial statement regarding the insurgent group’s occupation in Afghanistan. Nomani issued a statement, justifying the Taliban’s actions in Afghanistan and said that the Taliban has defeated the strongest forces of the whole world. Sajjad Nomani lauded the Taliban’s efforts in capturing Afghanistan and hailed the group as history-makers. Nomani said that he hopes that the Taliban can now set an example that could be followed by other countries. Nomani highlighted the Taliban’s amnesty and the situation of Afghan women. Regarding the occupation of Afghanistan, Maulana Sajjad Nomani thanked Allah and said, “The Taliban occupation of Afghanistan is justified and the Muslim of India salutes the Taliban. The whole world saw how an unarmed community fought against the world’s strongest army and they entered the palace of Kabul. There was no arrogance of any kind in them and there were no big words.
